Find some article/feature having to do with something that interests you and read about it.
1. On a piece of paper, write a one-sentence summary.
2. Jot three details.
3. Extrapolate three ideas and write those coherently. E.g., ways the knowledge could be put to use; how it could affect the future; questions that remain in your mind; how the information is troubling or encouraging, etc.

After 20 minutes at the substitute's direction, form a group of three and educate each other.
Now shuffle about and educate totally different people so you hear about a lot of different ideas.

JOURNAL Bad Seed Day 3: Write an overall review. Include what you think is the main point of the movie, and how well the producer/actors did at getting it across. Give it a grade or stars? Etc.

Weds., 1/4:
JOURNAL: Bad Seed Day 2: Okay, Christine (Rhoda's mom) was adopted, and her birth mother was “Bessie Danker,” a sociopathic murderer. Yikes!!
• Might Rhoda indeed be “bad seed,” and have inherited from her grandma Bessie an inability to feel for others ("sociopathic tendencies")?
• But why would her mom (Christine) be seemingly ok?
• Also, what would be the best thing for Rhoda’s mom to do now?
• More predictions?

What is “mood”? How is it different from “an emotion”? What sorts of things put you in a good mood? Bad mood?

JOURNAL OPTION TWO:
Do "Three Good Things" again. For each:
1. Title the good thing
2. What happened, in detail
3. How it made you feel then and later
4. What caused the event

Weds., 12/14:
JOURNAL (If absent you'll have to just write about anxiety disorders generally.):
Write a diary entry as if you are one of the people you saw. It can be a "normal" day for him/her, or one where he/she is getting better:
Jean (agoraphobic); Laura (germ-obsessed, hypochondriac mom); Louise (OCD); man who hoards; woman with fear of flying; Fred (comic-obsessed teen).
• It can be a typical day; or one where you’re improving.

OR you can write TO him or her, if you try to express empathy.


Tues., 12/13:
Disorders POWERPOINT 1 on disorders in general and anxiety disorders.

JOURNAL: Think of bodily illness (sickness).
• Define, explain, and/or give examples of “illness" or "sickness.” (I.e., what characteristics/features make something an "illness"?)
• How do you suppose mental illnesses are similar to, or different from, bodily illness?
• Write any questions you have about mental illness (and remember to ask them in the next coupla weeks).

WEEK FIVE


Fri., 12/9 TEST on emo/stress/happiness

JOURNAL: Write about at least one "good thing" using the format below.
"Three Good Things" © Univ. of Cal., Berkeley
Each day for at least one week, write down three things that went well for you that day, and provide an explanation for why they went well. It is important to create a physical record of your items by writing them down; it is not enough simply to do this exercise in your head. The items can be relatively small in importance (e.g., “my co-worker made the coffee today”) or relatively large (e.g., “I earned a big promotion”). To make this exercise part of your daily routine, some find that writing before bed is helpful.
As you write, follow these instructions:
  1. Give the event a title (e.g., “co-worker complimented my work on a project”)
  2. Write down exactly what happened in as much detail as possible, including what you did or said and, if others were involved, what they did or said.
  3. Include how this event made you feel at the time and how this event made you feel later (including now, as you remember it).
  4. Explain what you think caused this event—why it came to pass.
  5. Use whatever writing style you please, and do not worry about perfect grammar and spelling. Use as much detail as you'd like.
  6. If you find yourself focusing on negative feelings, refocus your mind on the good event and the positive feelings that came with it. This can take effort but gets easier with practice and can make a real difference in how you feel.

If you use the word “feeling,” make sure to explain THAT, since it doesn’t know what that means either. (Try thinking about what our bodies do when we emote - that can help you explain it.)

CHOICE ONE: Which view do you appreciate more: Psychodynamic theory, which emphasizes unconscious guilt and how knotted-up we are because of unexpressed desires;
or Humanistic theory, emphasizing potential and positivity?
• Explain why you think one is "better" at getting at "us" and our personality.
The one you prefer -- could it still be missing things the other view focuses on? Or is it pretty complete? Etc.

CHOICE TWO:
Think of the defense mechanisms you learned:
• sublimation • projection • regression • displacement • repression of memories • reaction formation • denial
Write examples from real life when you have seen people use one or more of them.
Which do you see yourself using sometimes? Which ones rarely or never?

JOURNAL: Now that we're a day removed from the results, try writing about the election in terms of people's thinking/emotions/behavior (i.e. the "psychology of the election").

Here are some possibilities:
• Why did some people get so enthusiastic about Mr. Trump in spite of some very serious flaws?
• Why did Mrs. Clinton, also with many serious flaws, not get such love (though more votes)?
• Why are so many of the losing side SO despondent and/or protesting? (I don't remember this after any previous election?
• How does this election make people feel about elections and America?
• How about you? Any feelings/thoughts after all this?
• Any other psychological stuff about the election. . .


Weds., 11/9:
JOURNAL: Think of a personality trait you have (a typical way of thinking/behaving/emoting/responding).
How might you have learned it through rewards or imitation?
Write about another if this doesn't give you enough verbiage.

Tues., 9/27:
JOURNAL: Right-brain IMAGINATION DAY: Pretend you’re a “vision” neuron inside a fetus migrating to the rear of the growing brain (where you know you’re supposed to end up). Write a diary entry for that day. What do you, the neuron, think/notice/do?

Mon., 9/26: JOURNAL: write about odd or interesting human behavior you've witnessed recently. Describe and try to explain what's goin on.

What does it seem better-than-average at? (Remember the brain handles coordination, interpersonal-relations, etc., NOT just school stuff.) What is it worse-than-average? How has it changed over time? Any areas you really wish it was better or worse at?

• What do you think of the research design overall?
• Which is weirder: the “guards” being so mean, or the “prisoners” being so passive?
• Dr. Zimbardo says, “We learned a lot.” Does the experiment tell us anything about human behavior in general?
• Was it worth doing, if indeed people were temporarily traumatized?
